The 55th Pasadena Showcase House of Design was held at the Boddy House on the grounds of Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge from April 21 – May 19, 2019.
The Hollywood Regency style, 12,000-square-foot mansion was designed by James E. Dolena and was reimagined by 26 designers.
The downstairs is laid out in a circular pattern revolving around a central entrance foyer and solarium. The rooms radiate like spokes of a wheel. These rooms include a living room, a solarium, a modern family salon, an entertainment lounge and bath, a powder room and a formal dining room. Directly off the dining room, there is a morning room, kitchen, and a catering kitchen.
There are two staircases that lead upstairs, which is divided into two wings. The Master Bedroom wing includes a master bath, a linen closet, a vestibule leading into the master dressing room. Full-length French doors lead to a balcony with a spectacular view of the San Gabriel Mountains. The east side of the second floor across the petite landing, is a lady’s hideaway, a writer’s haven, a guest bedroom suite with a bath, a teen atelier, and a craft and cigar retreat.
The proceeds from the Pasadena Showcase House of Design and the donations we receive allow us to fund three annual music programs, plus award gifts and grants to other nonprofit organizations that provide music programs including music therapy, music education, scholarships and the underwriting of concerts
Over 23 million dollars in gifts and grants has been awarded to support the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Walt Disney Concert Hall and local symphonic, cultural and educational programs since 1948. Examples of past recipients include underwriting of concerts, choral productions, musical theater, opera, jazz quartets, marching bands and orchestras at local schools, senior centers and many other non-profit organizations. Additionally, music therapy for at-risk children, scholarships for young musicians and music education at a variety of levels are staples of our program.
Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition
Since 1985, nearly $600,000 in prize money has been awarded at PSHA’s Instrumental Competition. Exceptionally talented musicians, aged 16 to 24, compete annually for about $30,000 in monetary prizes in the categories of strings, woodwinds and brass to further their music education.
Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile™
Created by PSHA in 1971, the Music Mobile™ van, equipped with musical instruments, has visited nearly 125,000 third graders in their classrooms introducing them to the sounds and magic of a symphony orchestra. PSHA’s Music Mobile™ program is a hands-on award-winning program that, with the partnership of the Pasadena Conservatory of Music, is presented to third grade students throughout the San Gabriel Valley. It provides an introduction to classical music and the opportunity to play a selection of instruments and be part of a simulated orchestra.
Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert
Having begun in 1953, nearly 250,000 fourth graders have attended this annual youth oriented concert with performances at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and, starting in 2003, at Walt Disney Concert Hall. PSHA’s Youth Concert is a free concert designed to weave musical concepts into an appealing program that is presented at Walt Disney Concert Hall by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for over 4,000 fourth grade students annually.
